Milan have confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club, keeping him at San Siro past his 39th birthday.

The Swede returned to Milan in December after the expiration of his contract at LA Galaxy, signing a one-year deal with the club.

The signing was initially met with some scepticism given the striker is in the twilight of his career, but it proved a hugely successful move for all involved.

Ibrahimovic chipped in with ten goals and five assists in 18 Serie A appearances as Milan recovered from a sluggish start to the season to finish sixth in the league.

The 38-year-old was widely reported to be keen on remaining at Milan past his initial one-year deal, and the club took to their official website to confirm that an extension to his contract had been agreed.

A Milan statement read: “AC Milan is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement for the contract renewal of Zlatan Ibrahimović, extending the partnership with the Rossoneri Club until 30 June 2021.”

Ibrahimovic is in his second spell with Milan after spending two seasons with the club between 2010 and 2012 – one on loan from Barcelona, and one as a permanent member of the squad.

He has scored 56 goals in 85 appearances for the club across his two stints, becoming the first player to score 50 Serie A goals for both Milan clubs.

Ibrahimovic had previously spent three years with Milan’s rivals Inter between 2006 and 2009 prior to his blockbuster move to Barcelona.

The forward won the Serie A title during his debut season with Milan – his fourth Italian league title triumph after his hat-trick of consecutive table topping seasons with Inter.

Ibrahimovic and Milan returned to pre-season training in Monday ahead of the new Serie A season, which gets underway on 19 September.
