Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique Lyonnais - UEFA Women's Champions League Semi Final

Lyon reached the Champions League final with a 1-0 victory over French rivals Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening.

Les Fenottes broke their own record for appearances in the final after securing their place in their fifth consecutive showpiece, and ninth overall.

Wendie Renard scored the decisive goal 67 minutes in, but Lyon will be without Nikita Parris for the final at the Anoeta Stadium on Sunday after the former Manchester City forward received her marching orders for a second yellow card.

While a tight and cagey affair, it was Lyon who saw more possession over the course of the match with their 57%, also boasting the game’s best two opportunities. Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir should have given Lyon the lead in the first half, while Nadia Nadim could easily have been sent for an early shower, were it not for the referee’s forgiveness.

The game burst into life 66 minutes in, however, after Grace Geyoro hung out a cynical leg to bring down Lucy Bronze, in turn seeing red after earning her second caution of the evening. It went from bad to worse for PSG at this point, as Amel Majri’s resulting free kick was swung into the box and Renard rose highest at the far post to power a header into the bottom corner.

With Lyon looking comfortable at this stage, Parris took a needless risk. Already on a yellow card, she charged down PSG goalkeeper Christiane Endler and got nowhere near the ball. Parris didn’t halt her run and clattered into the keeper, immediately realising the error of her ways and held her hands up in the air after being dismissed.

The 2019 summer signing will miss Sunday’s final with Wolfsburg, who reached this stage with victory over Barcelona for a repeat of the final two years ago – where Lyon emerged as 4-1 winners.
