Incumbent governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, won the October 10, 2020 election with 292,830 votes, while Jegede completed with 195,791 votes.
In a petition filed before the tribunal, Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the election was marred by irregularities and pockets of violence and intimidation.

He challenged Akeredolu’s victory on 4 grounds, together with faulting the governor’s emergence as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC, and deputy governor-elect, Lucky Aiyedatiwa had been also joined within the petition.
The election was contested by a complete of 17 candidates.
