Manchester United could offer Diogo Dalot and Sergio Romero to Aston Villa as makeweights in a deal that would bring Jack Grealish to Old Trafford.
United have been chasing Villa’s offensive talisman for some time after a spectacular 2019/2020 campaign. Only Kevin De Bruyne racked up more key passes than Grealish last season and the Englishman also led the way in progressive dribbling yards.
He finished the campaign with ten goals and eight assists but was sensationally left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rates the 24-year-old highly and could be willing to part with two members of his squad in order to sweeten the pot for Villa. According to the Daily Star, United may offer up both Dalot and Romero to offset a portion of Grealish’s £75m price tag.
Dean Smith’s side are keen to strengthen at the back and have already made an unsuccessful ploy to poach Aaron Ramsdale from relegated Bournemouth. Other than lowly Norwich, no Premier League side had a worse defensive record than Villa last season – with the west Midlanders conceding no less than 67 goals.
The additions of Dalot or Romero could help tighten up this leaky defence. Both players could be keen on the move as well, with first-team opportunities limited at the theatre of dreams. Dalot made just 11 appearances during the 2019/20 season – so may be tempted by more regular action – while Romero barely featured at all.
The Argentine did not play a single Premier League game, and was also dropped from United’s Europa League side from the quarter-final stage onwards. David de Gea regained his place on those occasions, and Romero now has Dean Henderson for company; the young keeper having returned to Old Trafford following a loan spell at Sheffield United, penning a new five-year deal in the process.
